Initially, the historical Airport of Maleme, served after the war interior flights up to 1959, when for first time it was transported in the military airport of Souda. Then, in 1967, was built the first building of Terminal with two places of quartering of planes. From 1974, when the Airport began to serve also international flights, his insufficient capacity, because the continuously increasing movement, it created the need of manufacture of new building. Finally in 1996 functioned the new building with total surface 14,650 m2, and 6 places of quartering of planes, that have prospect to cover trnasportation 1,350,000 passengers, annually. In 2000 received officially the name I.DASKALOGIANNIS". 
The airport is located 15 kms NE from the city of Chania in the peninsula of Souda.
